- Extend your current system – If your system has a large enough capacity to condition the additional space, you may only need to extend the ductwork and install registers. For a zoned system, you may also want to add dampers to make the addition a separate zone. Sizing a furnace and air conditioning system is tricky, so talk with a HVAC service provider before extending your system to make sure the job will meet the local city and municipality codes.
- Upgrade your system – If extending your HVAC system isn’t possible or practical, use your construction project as an opportunity to install a new, more efficient HVAC comfort system. Today’s systems are up to 40 percent more energy efficient than those made even 10 years ago. Just as important, you’ll be able to choose a system sized to handle your whole Dallas-Fort Worth home, including the new addition.
- Install ductless mini splits – This system consists of an outdoor condenser unit and one or more indoor air handlers that distribute air. Installation is simple because there’s no need for ducts or complicated wiring. The system requires only a small space and minimal disruption in your home. Mini split systems save energy because there’s no ductwork to leak conditioned air and they are usually rated up to 30 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating). As another benefit, mini splits will let you control the temperature in your addition independently from the rest of your house.
Other options for a separate system include a high-velocity mini duct system or radiant floor heating. Radiant systems are more expensive to install than forced air systems, but they’re also up to 30 percent more efficient.
