DIY Methods for Unclogging Your Drain
Drains are integral to keeping our homes’ plumbing systems running smoothly. More often than not, we don’t even think about them because we just assume they’ll keep working as intended. But every now and then, life throws a wrench in our plans and our drain clogs for whatever reason. Obviously, this is annoying. We might be tempted to just throw our hands up and call a plumber, but hold on!
Instead of doing that, give a few of these DIY methods for unclogging your drain a shot. One of them may work, depending on what is causing the clog. And if you find out that one of them solves your clogged-drain problem, you’ll be glad you didn’t waste money on a house call. Of course, this doesn’t always work – and when the issue is too tough, give the plumbers at Crawford Services a call!
Boil Water
A lot of times, the things that are clogging your drains can be dissolved with a heavy dose of piping-hot water. To make sure that you properly remove any clogs with this method, pour boiling water into the drain and let it sit for a bit. Repeat the process a couple of times, making sure to wait a few seconds in-between each time you pour the water.
Use a Drain Snake
This is one of the most tried-and-true methods for unclogging a drain, and it’s simple because it’s effective! Using a drain snake will help you snag any materials that might’ve clogged your drains – ones that aren’t made of dissolvable things like food.
Just be sure to look up how to properly use a drain snake before you start using one, because you can accidentally make it worse – although that’s fairly hard to do.
Grab It!
How willing are you to get your hands dirty? If you don’t mind, then sometimes grabbing the clog and removing it by hand is the best way to go about it. Make sure to wear rubber gloves, though, because it can get nasty down there.
Lift off the drain cover if it’s blocking the drain in a shower, and just reach in there and yank the clog out. If you’re lucky enough to have an easy-to-access drain, then that should do it. Otherwise, one of the other methods will have to do.
Use a Drain Cleaner
There’s a reason that drain-cleaning chemicals exist. Sometimes clogs are just too hard to reach, and the only way to get them out is to enlist the help of chemistry. However, these should be used as a last resort. They can corrode certain materials and appliances, so always do your due diligence before just dumping stuff down the drain.
Cleaning your drain to rid it of a clog is frustrating, and depending on the severity of the clog, it can be time-consuming as well. If you’d prefer to avoid the DIY drain-cleaning – or if you just can’t seem to get it out yourself – let Crawford Services handle it! Our team has the know-how to rid your drains of clogs and can help you ensure they don’t come back.
